5 Beautiful Plants that Thrive in Northern Nevada Summers
By: Rosalie Merriner
Summer is in full swing here in Northern Nevada. Temperatures are soaring, humidity is dropping, and the sun is shining relentlessly. Northern Nevada summers can be intense—not only for us, but for our landscapes as well. Fortunately, there are many plants that are perfectly adapted to these harsh conditions. Today, we're taking a look at five plants that thrive in the heat of Nevada summers.
1. Lavender (Lavandula)
Lavender is a Northern Nevada favorite thanks to its love of full sun and well-drained soil. It is incredibly low-maintenance and highly resilient to drought and heat. Not only does lavender add beauty to the landscape, but its distinct fragrance is both noticeable and calming. Its vibrant purple blooms attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies and require very little water once the plant is fully established. Compared to many other flowering plants, lavender offers exceptional color and performance with minimal upkeep.
2. Russian Sage (Salvia yangii)
Russian sage is often compared to lavender because of its similar appearance and fragrance. However, it features silvery foliage that creates a striking contrast in the landscape. Its long-lasting purple flowers add beautiful color and texture throughout the summer months. Like lavender, Russian sage is extremely drought tolerant and can easily withstand intense sun exposure and poor soil conditions. As an added bonus, it is also deer resistant, making it a great choice for many Northern Nevada properties.
3. Red Yucca (Hesperaloe parviflora)
Despite its name, red yucca is not actually a true yucca. Instead, it belongs to the asparagus family. This hardy ornamental plant is a favorite among hummingbirds thanks to its striking coral-red flower spikes. Red yucca requires very little water once established and can easily handle reflected heat from sidewalks, driveways, and walls. With its evergreen foliage and long-lasting blooms, it provides year-round visual interest and is one of the toughest plants available for hot, dry landscapes.
4. Desert Marigold (Baileya multiradiata)
The desert marigold is native to Southern Nevada but can perform well in Northern Nevada when given some protection during the winter months. This cheerful wildflower produces bright yellow blooms from spring through fall, bringing vibrant color to the landscape for much of the year. Desert marigolds thrive in rocky, well-drained soils and require very little irrigation. Their long blooming season and drought tolerance make them an excellent choice for homeowners looking to create a colorful, low-water landscape.
5. Penstemon (Plantaginaceae)
Penstemon, also known as beardtongue, is an excellent choice for Northern Nevada gardens because many varieties are native to the region. Its tubular flowers attract hummingbirds, bees, and other beneficial pollinators throughout the growing season. Penstemons are well adapted to dry conditions and offer a wide range of flower colors, making them a versatile addition to almost any landscape design. In addition to their beauty, they help support local wildlife and promote a healthy ecosystem.
These five plants are all phenomenal choices for Northern Nevada landscapes. Not only are they beautiful and relatively low maintenance, but they are also well adapted to the region's hot, dry summers. By incorporating drought-tolerant plants like these into your landscape, you can reduce water usage while still enjoying vibrant color, texture, and seasonal interest. Whether you're refreshing an existing garden or planning a new landscape, selecting plants that naturally thrive in our climate is one of the best ways to create a yard that remains healthy, attractive, and sustainable all summer long.
