What is a conifer? Conifers are a group of plants that typically produce cones and have needle-like foliage. Many conifers are evergreen, meaning they keep their foliage throughout the year, although not every conifer is evergreen and some, such as larches, lose their needles seasonally. In Northern Nevada landscapes, conifers are a popular choice due to their beauty, structure and greenery through the year. Conifers can serve many purposes while also providing shelter and habitat for local wildlife. However, Northern Nevada’s high-desert climate, alkaline soils, cold winters, and hot summers mean homeowners need to be thoughtful when selecting the right conifer for their yard.

Choosing the right conifer starts with understanding the conditions and available space in your yard. Homeowners should consider the plant’s mature size, sunlight requirements, soil conditions, drainage, and water needs before deciding where to plant. Taking these factors into consideration can help prevent common landscaping problems and give your conifer the best chance to thrive. These are some things to consider… 

• Space - One of the most important things to consider when planting a conifer is how large it will eventually become. A small tree or shrub at the nursery may grow significantly wider and taller over the years, so always check its mature dimensions before planting. Be mindful of placing large conifers near homes, fences, driveways, sidewalks, or power lines where future growth could become a problem.

• Sunlight - Sunlight is another important factor when choosing a conifer, as different varieties have different light requirements. Many conifers prefer full sun, while others can tolerate or even benefit from some afternoon shade

• Soil and Drainage - Northern Nevada soils can be alkaline, compacted, and low in organic matter, which can make establishing new plants challenging. Good drainage is important because while conifers need regular moisture, many do not tolerate consistently soggy soil.

• Water Needs - Not all conifers have the same water requirements, so homeowners should select varieties that fit their landscape’s irrigation capabilities. Some species are well suited to drought-conscious landscapes, while others need more consistent moisture to remain healthy and attractive. 

Planting and Caring for Conifers

Before purchasing a tree or shrub, choose a location that provides the appropriate amount of sunlight, drainage, and room for mature growth, then plant it at the correct depth. Newly planted conifers should be watered deeply as they establish, while mulch can help conserve soil moisture as long as it is kept away from the trunk. As the  conifers mature, homeowners should continue monitoring their irrigation needs rather than assuming an established plant can survive without extra water.
