Petunias Annual Springtime Flowers

Antonucci Lawn and Garden is continuing its series on local plants and trees. We are experts in Northern Nevada Reno landscaping services. So with spring in full force, our lawn garden design experts would like to highlight some of our favorite springtime Annuals that we will be planting over the next 2 to 3 weeks.

Petunias

One of the most popular annuals to plant, homeowners love Petunias for their vibrant and long-lasting colors. Petunias are hardy bloomers, with their color usually lasting from mid-spring to late fall. One of the most important requirements for the Petunia is the location you decide to plant them. Petunias require a minimum of 5 to 6 hours of sunlight per day. The more direct sunlight they have, the more flowers they will produce. Petunias are also pretty tolerant of heat. They require little water, except for the spreading, ground cover Petunias. They like to receive a good soaking at least a couple of times a week. If you plan on planting Petunias in a hanging basket of some sort, they will then require daily watering.

There are four categories of Petunias based on their flower size and where they will make their home:

  • Grandiflora Petunias are probably the most popular with the largest flower. They can develop in the summer to 12 to 15 inches tall.

  • Multiflora Petunias are a little more compact but have the most number of blossoms at any given time.

  • Milliflora Petunias are the miniature petunias, yet produce an abundant amount of small flowers. They do well scattered in a basket setting with other annual flowers.

  • Groundcover Petunias are a rapidly spreading groundcover that grows to about 6 inches tall. When properly watered and fertilized, they produce so many flowers that you can't see any foliage. They are ideal for hanging baskets and window boxes.

Regardless of which Petunia category you decide on, you will be very pleased with the array of color that will blanket your Reno landscaping for the spring and throughout the summer and into fall.Check back next week as we examine another springtime favorite color.
