Landscaping Around the World: Ireland

By: Rosalie Merriner

Welcome back to our Landscaping Around the World series! Last month, we traveled east to China, exploring the intentionality and symbolism of the Shanshui style. Today, we’re heading west to Ireland to take a closer look at the rustic style. Inspired by the wild Irish countryside, this style is calmer and more earthy than other popular Irish designs, such as cottage gardens.

Plants

Plants are the main aspect of this rustic design. They provide the flow and texture that define the style. Native Irish plants are especially popular, as they create a lush, organic feel. Below are some of the most commonly used:

  • Ornamental Grasses

    • Ireland is often referred to as the “Emerald Isle” due to its abundance of lush greenery. With this in mind, grasses are undoubtedly the foundation of the rustic look. They fill space easily and are naturally low-maintenance.

  • Ferns

    • Ferns, like grasses, are essential to the overall feel of rustic Irish design. They provide a soft, feathery texture that fills in among other elements. Ferns thrive in shady areas and do well in moist conditions.

  • Heather

    • Heather is native to the island and can often be found across the Irish hills. It is a low-growing shrub that produces pink and purple flowers. Because its colors are more muted than other wildflowers, it is a perfect fit for this design, adding subtle color without overpowering the landscape.

Hardscaping Elements

This is where the style truly comes together. Hardscape elements should feel like they belong naturally to the land. Like the plants, they should create the impression of a space that has always existed.

  • Boulders and Rock Features

    • Rocks and boulders play a key role in achieving a wild, natural look. The goal is to make them appear as though they have always been part of the landscape. Large boulders can be installed partially buried rather than sitting on top of the soil. They should be grouped unevenly, with a mix of sizes to enhance the natural effect.

  • Natural Paths

    • Adding a path is both practical and visually appealing, giving the space a subtle, whimsical feel. In this style, paths are never straight but instead curve and wind through the landscape. Materials can include packed earth, gravel, or stepping stones. Like the rocks, paths should look as though they have formed naturally over time.

Planting Style

The planting strategy is just as important as the elements themselves. Plants are grouped in drifts, mimicking how they grow in the wild. This style allows for more spacing than a traditional cottage garden, helping the space feel open and natural. The combination of plants and rocks introduces a range of earthy tones and contrasting textures, creating an organic, cohesive environment. Movement is also an important feature, achieved through wind flowing gently through the grasses.

Final Thoughts

The rustic Irish landscaping style captures the quiet beauty of nature by blending plants and hardscape elements into one cohesive, organic design. By focusing on natural patterns, textures, and movement, it creates a space that feels both peaceful and timeless. Whether in Ireland or elsewhere, this approach encourages working with nature rather than against it.
