Landscaping Myths vs Facts (Part 2)

By: Rosalie Merriner

A wise person once said, “A lie gets a head start, but the truth always crosses the finish line.” This isn't only true in our own lives; it can also ring true in landscaping. Last month, we looked at three landscaping myths that have been accepted as truth. Today, we are going to take a look at three more commonly used tips that may actually be doing more harm than good.

Myth #1: More Mulch is Always Better

Mulch can be incredibly useful for many different plants. It helps protect them from extreme heat and cold by acting as a layer of insulation. While this can be beneficial for plants during the heat of summer or the cold of winter, mulch can also be harmful if it isn't placed and maintained properly. Often, homeowners will add mulch themselves in an attempt to help their trees, only to unintentionally cause them additional stress. Thick layers of mulch piled against tree trunks can trap moisture, encourage rot, and create an environment where pests and disease can become a problem. Mulch should be applied at an appropriate depth and kept away from the trunk or base of plants. So, while mulch can be incredibly helpful, more isn't always better. Using too much mulch or placing it incorrectly can actually cause plants and trees to deteriorate rather than thrive.

Myth #2: Xeriscaping Means Having a Yard Full of Rocks

Another commonly accepted myth is that xeriscaping is simply a yard full of rocks and that it isn't visually appealing. By definition, xeriscaping is a landscaping approach that focuses on reducing the amount of water needed to maintain a landscape. The word “xero” comes from the Greek word for dry, which helps explain the concept. Xeriscaping is about creating a water-efficient landscape, not simply replacing a lawn with rocks. A xeriscape can include colorful flowers, shrubs, ornamental grasses, trees, pathways, and other landscape features while still using water efficiently.

Although xeriscaping may look different from more traditional landscaping styles, design plays a major role in creating a beautiful and functional space. Thoughtful plant placement, color combinations, hardscaping, and other design elements can create a landscape that feels intentional rather than haphazard. In a previous blog, we looked at tips for creating a colorful xeriscape that provides interest throughout the year. Myth #3: Landscaping is Only About Plants

The last myth we will be looking at today is the idea that landscaping is only about plants. While plants are certainly a major part of landscaping, they are not the only component. Without thoughtful design, irrigation, masonry, fencing, lighting, and other outdoor structures, a landscape may not feel or function as a complete outdoor space. Landscaping is about bringing all of these different elements together to create a space that is both beautiful and functional. Each component has a purpose, whether it is providing shade, directing foot traffic, managing water, adding privacy, or simply creating a welcoming place to spend time outdoors. At Antonucci Lawn and Garden, we have spent years growing our business and expanding our experience across many different areas of landscaping. This has given us the knowledge and tools needed to create complete outdoor spaces that homeowners can enjoy for years to come.

Conclusion

Landscaping advice is everywhere, but not every tip you hear is necessarily right for your yard. From adding too much mulch to assuming xeriscaping is only rocks, or thinking landscaping is simply about choosing the right plants, understanding the facts can make a big difference. Every landscape is different, especially here in Northern Nevada, where our hot summers, cold winters, and unique soil conditions can create additional challenges. By taking the time to understand your landscape's individual needs and using thoughtful design practices, you can create an outdoor space that is healthy, functional, and beautiful for years to come.
